Get Your Beach On | Costa del Sol favourite spots

Whilst you are staying at Cortijo de los Cien Canos, a day trip for one or more days is of course, the beach.

We love, love, love doing beach days (it may be our favourite thing). So with that in mind I thought I would put together a list of some of my favourite beaches. All are within easy reach of your holiday home.

Pedregalejo

Definitely one of our favourite beaches at the moment. We go for sneaky weekends away here every now and again.
This beach is close enough to Malaga with an authentic Spanish experience. Visitors here are a good mix of locals and tourists from across the globe.

The stretch of beach is a mixture of straight and small little coves, one small cove is directly opposite one of our favourite restaurants, La Chancla.

La Chancla is one of the many places to eat and drink, Pedregalejo has a good mixture of cuisines including Mexican, Italian and of course traditional Spanish.
We love La Chancla because it has a great menu which includes Vegan and Vegetarian options; and the service and paseo-front location is fabulous.
They also have sunbeds but in peak time it is recommended that you book them before you go.

It is possible to hire all sorts of water sports equipment at the beach. I love the paddle boards, which are a popular way of exploring the coastline.

Pedregalejo is 50 minutes’ drive from the Cortijo.

Highly recommended!

Malagueta

This beach is Malaga city’s closest beach. It is an upmarket area popular with the Malagueños and the prices in the select chiringuitos (Beach restaurants) reflect this, but it is a treat.
The beach is lovely with little bays and warm sea.

It is a short walk (or hire an electric bike or scooter) to Malaga centre and hop off at the Marina of Malaga on the way (Muelle Uno), for more bars, restaurants and shops. Like all city beaches a day out here offers a good choice for sunbathing and a city visit too.

Malagueta beach is 59 minutes’ drive from the Cortijo.

El Palo

Just 20 minutes from Malaga, this is an old fisherman’s barrió. The beach here is pleasant, with a volleyball pitch and other ways to keep fit if you want more than the normal paseo. El Palo offers a more traditional Spanish beach experience, with the choice of food reflected and it is very poular with locals and tourists alike. In high season and on weekends it’s advisable to book a table at the most popular restaurants.

El Tintero is one such favourite which we advise a booking for. Serving staff wander around the tables with beautiful seafood dishes held up. If you like the look of it, you stop them and they will give you that dish. If you don’t like the look of that dish wait for the next one. You can order off the menu if that is not your thing.

El Palo is 56 minutes’ drive from the Cortijo.

Torre del Mar

This is another of our favourites. We love the paseo at the top of the beach.
The beach is deep and there will always be plenty of room for you to have a great beach day.

A plethora of restaurants await here and the standards are really high. A couple of chiringuitos we go to that are on the paseo or on the beach are Casa San Miguel (great fish dishes, lovely sardines and even a vegan burger!) and Sirena Beach which is on the playa itself with sunbeds too (a beach club vibe).

Our favourite restaurant here at the moment is “Bloom”. Located on the road adjacent to the beach it specialises in modern tapas. The food here is fresh and tasty and reasonably priced. It is our go-to place if we have a day out here.

Torre del Mar is 60 minutes’ drive from the Cortijo.

Benajarafe

Benajarafe is a hidden gem between the larger resorts of Torre del Mar and Rincon de la Victoria. It’s growing in popularity with tourists, so arrive early at the weekends to secure your place.

A wide beach with plenty of room pretty much all the time. If you get there early enough you will even be able to park on the beach front. Otherwise parking is limited so I recommend you plan your day well.
There are some great restaurants, cafes and chiringuitos here. Things are changing quickly as the area is on the way up, new places to eat are opening each year. Let us know what you find.

Just up the beach road at Chilches border is a great Chiringuito called Playa Malaya. Tables are inside, on the terrace or on the beach depending on what you fancy, and you can just pop in for a drink and feel the sand between your toes, sipping a cervesa.

Benajarafe is 60 minutes’ drive from the Cortijo.

Torremolinos

Wait it’s not what you think it is, we promise. Put the “Brits-abroad / pints of John Smiths to one side for a moment. Torremolinos is a large resort of multiple beaches, so you can easily find a more authentic and relaxing environment for your beach day.

Los Alomos is one of our go-to beaches, it is the beach nearest to the airport road / San Julian. The beach is wide and you can normally find a great chiringuito with available sunbeds.

The chiringuitos here are a good mixture of traditional, family run places that offer a no-frills approach (like El Sardina) or you can opt for the multiple Beach Clubs (such as La Playa) that are springing up every year, they are stylish with great food. Favoured by the beautiful people from Malaga. It’s instagramtastic.

There is a vibrant nightlife scene here in Torremolinos, whatever you are looking for.
